OMG I’m sorry! I forgot to update this afternoon! Hopefully nobody is too mad about it. I’m pretty proud of this episode too. As a European only game, there was relatively little information on this one and it’s the first on this show that I imagine most people have never heard of. So enjoy!

1/27 – Underworld: The Eternal War

Hello and welcome! My name is Katosepe and I’ll be your host for today’s video game of the day.

Today’s game is the only console video game based on the popular Underworld film franchise. Underworld: The Eternal War is a twin-stick shooter released for the Playstation 2, exclusively in Europe. Made by Lucky Chicken Games, Underworld: The Eternal War loosely adapts the plot of the first Underworld film, focusing on the war between vampires and lycans.

Players can choose to play as one of four characters from either the vampires or the lycans. Characters such as Selene and Raze are playable from each side of the conflict. The game can be played with two players in a co-op mode as well.

Missions are given at the start of each level and consist of objectives such as kill the enemy leader or take a particular item. Levels either take place in the streets of Budapest or in the sewers underneath the city. Players gain access to a wide variety of weaponry from pistols to flamethrowers in order to wipe out the opposing enemies. There is also an experience system allowing players to level up after stages and put points into additional Health or other stats.

While the game was originally intended to be made for PS2, Xbox and PC in Europe and North America, all versions were cancelled except for the European PS2 release. No explanation has been given for this.

The game is relatively unknown and I was not able to find much in the way of critical reaction. The few fan reviews I have found have been middling with many criticising the poor graphics and the repetitive gameplay. While the game seems to be easy to obtain, North American players will need a PAL Playstation 2 in order to play due to the console’s region locking.

Check back here tomorrow for another Video Game of the Day. If you enjoy these updates, please consider leaving a review on Amazon and spreading the word about what we’re doing here. Full transcripts and other musings are available on videogameoftheday.com
