3/28 – Steins; Gate
Hello and welcome. My name is Katosepe and I’ll be your host for today’s Video Game of the Day.
Today’s Video Game of the Day is the cult visual novel hit, Steins; Gate, developed by 5pb and Nitro Plus and originally released on the Xbox 360 in 2009.
Steins;Gate is the second game in the thematic Science Adventure series. While not directly linked to the previous game Chaos;Head, both stories take place in the same universe and share similar sci-fi themes.
As a visual novel, Steins;Gate has little in the way of gameplay and simply has players make choices along the path which affect many aspects of the story. The most common way this is done in Steins;Gate is by answering or not answering phone calls as well as how the player replies to texts.
The storyline follows Rintaro Okabe, a self-described mad scientist who fancies himself an evil supervillain out to overthrow the world. He is obsessed with conspiracy theories and believes a shady organization is out to stop him. His friends, Mayuri and Daru often play into his fantasies and the three work on scientific inventions together until one day, they accidentally discover a method for sending text messages into the past.
Steins;Gate has obtained a strong cult following both in Japan and in the west. In 2017, Famitsu held a reader vote which listed Steins;Gate as the best adventure game of all time. Several western outlets such as US Gamer and Eurogamer awarded the game perfect scores in their reviews. The game has since been ported to PC, PSP, PS Vita. PS3, PS4, iOS and Android. It has received an updated remake called Steins;Gate Elite which uses the art assets from the anime series rather than the hand-drawn animations of the original. The game has also been adapted into radio fiction, a movie and even a stage play. The sequel, Steins;Gate 0 was released in 2015.
