5/25 – World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck

Hello and welcome! My name is Katosepe and I’ll be your host for today’s Video Game of the Day.

Most of our time this week has been spent in the mid-2000’s so for today’s game, let’s head back to the Sega Genesis to take a look at World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. World of Illusion was developed by Sega AM7, the team behind all of the Disney Illusion titles, and was released in 1992.

World of Illusion sees Mickey and Donald discovering a magical box. When they open the box, the evil wizard Pete traps them inside. They must travel through the magical, illusory world in order to escape.

The biggest change from the first game is that World of Illusion allows two players to play cooperatively, one as Mickey and one as Donald. In coop, each character has unique abilities that allow them to assist the other player across or over obstacles. In single-player, players can choose either Mickey or Donald and their path through the level will change accordingly. Regardless of character, players can attack enemies by using their magical capes to turn enemies into other objects like doves or rabbits. After each level, players learn a new spell to help them further on their journey.

World of Illusion was seen by critics as being very easy to complete but the graphics were outstanding for their time. Each world contains influence from Disney movies such as Alice in Wonderland, Snow White and Fantasia. The coop play was also praised as being great for kids. World of Illusion would be the last Illusion title made for the Sega Genesis although it would see another sequel, Land of Illusion, on the Game Gear. The creator, Emiko Yamamoto, would continue to work with Disney in the video game sector and would eventually go on to help produce Kingdom Hearts.
